Study History

The holotype CD43, which is a partial skeleton, was found in the Mangahouanga Stream area of the Tahora formation on the North Island ( New Zealand ) [3] . The species was first described by Wiffen in 1980 as Moanasaurus mangahouangae , a type species of the monotypic genus Moanasaurus [4] . The generic name consists of two roots: Maori moana - “sea” and other Greek. σαῦρος - “lizard, lizard” [2] .

In 1989, Wright once again studied this species and transferred it to the genus of the Mosasaurs , thereby transferring the genus Moanasaurus to the category of debatable [5] .

Description

The length of Mosasaurus mangahouangae is 12 m, of which 78 cm are the skull. The predator probably hunted for other marine reptiles [2] .
