Biography

Rajkumar was born on April 24, 1929, in , a small village in the predominantly cannon-speaking Taluka of Talavadi in the former Madras presidency (now Iroda district, Tamil Nadu ). At birth, he received the name Mutturaj in honor of Muthathi Raji (the name of the Hindu deity Hanuman ), who is the deity of the temple located in , a settlement on the banks of the Kaveri River in modern Karnataka [4] . His father Puttwasmaya, and mother Lakshmamma, were impoverished theatrical artists from Singanallur (now the Coimbatore district). Puttaswamayya performed roles such as Kamsa , Ravana and Hiranyakasipu . Rajkumar dropped out of school at eight years old and was later noticed by film producers who gave him small roles that he played until the age of 25 [5] , so in 1952 he appeared in Sri Srinivasa Kalyana (1952) as one of seven saptarishes (sages). It was a minor role, in his recollection, the scene ended before he recognized himself on the screen.

Career

Rajkumar began his career with his father in the troupe. In 1953, he was spotted by director H. L. N. Simchoi, who was looking for a man with a good physique and a pleasant face. Simha signed a contract with him for the film and dubbed it "Rajkumar" [6] . The film Bedara Kannappa , released in 1954, was a commercial success and gave the actor a career start. Rajkumar also played in his Telugy-language remake of Sri Kalahastiswara Mahatyam , which was the only film in his career that was not shot in Kannada .

Rajkumar became the first Indian actor who played a role like James Bond in Jedara Bale [7] .

He was also one of the few Indian actors who sang in many of his films. He learned to sing in the Gubby Viranna troupe. His first song in the movie was “Om Namaha Shivaya” in the Ohileshwara film of 1956, but he became a full-fledged singer only in 1974, when he sang instead of P. B. Shrinivas for the film Sampathige Savaal [4] , after which he sang songs in almost all their films. And for the performance of the song "Naadamaya Ee Lokavellaa" from the film Jeevana Chaitra, he even won the National Film Awards [8] .

His latest film was Shabdavedhi , released in 2000. [9]

Death

On April 12, 2006, he returned to his Sadashivanagar residence after a daily walk and medical examination. At about 1:30 pm, sitting down on the sofa, he asked a member of his family to turn off the fan and suddenly went limp. His personal therapist, Ramana Rao, was called, who gave the actor an indirect heart massage and artificial respiration. Rajkumar was then taken to the Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, where further resuscitation efforts failed and was pronounced dead at 14:05 [10] .

Bust of Rajkumar in Jayanagar ( Bangalore )

On April 19 of the same year, the state government announced that a memorial worth Rs 100 million will be made in honor of Rajkumar at Kanteerava Studios in conjunction with the Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry [11] . The memorial plan was developed by a group of members of the Rajkumar family, representatives of the Kannada film industry and the state government. After a delay in the distribution of funds and land, it was finally opened in November 2014, after $ 70 million was allocated for its development over an area of 2.5 crores (1.0 ha). It included Rajkumar’s “open-air hall, mini-pond, landscaping and bust”. 40 photos of selected films with his participation were stored at the inauguration. There was a permanent exhibition on the history of Rajkumar’s films, which included his photographs, trophies and souvenirs, along with the texts of dialogues, scripts, songs and other memorabilia associated with him. An annual calendar for 2012 was released with photos of Rajkumar and images from his films.

Personal life

A year before his career, on June 25, 1953, Rajkumar married his 14-year-old cousin Parvatamme in the city of Nanjangud. It was a contractual marriage, which their fathers agreed upon after the birth of Parvatamma. The couple had five children: sons Shiva , Raghavendra, Punit and daughters Lakshmi and Purnima. At first, the young family lived in Madras with the extended family along with other relatives. In 1972, Rajkumar with his wife and children moved to Bangalore, after he received offers to play in several films [12] .
