John Philip Abizaid ( born John Philip Abizaid , Arabic جون أبي زيد , born 1951) was an American general who in 2003-2007 headed the US Central Command .

Born in Coleville, California . The ancestors of Abizaid moved to California from Lebanon in the XIX century . In 1973 he graduated from the military academy at West Point . He served in the 82nd Airborne Division . He took part in the invasion of Grenada ( 1983 ), in the operation to protect the Kurds in northern Iraq after the Gulf War , in the peacekeeping operation in Bosnia . He was commandant of West Point, later commanded the 1st Infantry Division in Germany . July 7, 2003 replaced General Tommy Franks as head of the US Central Command. He was in this position until March 16, 2007, was replaced by Admiral William Fallon . May 1, 2007, resigned after 34 years of military service. In April 2014, he was appointed Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine [1] .
November 13, 2018, appointed by President Trump as US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia [2] .
