General Information
Velika Gorica is located 15 kilometers south-east from the center of Zagreb , on a lowland plain known as Turopolje. The city is located near the city airport, is considered part of the Greater Zagreb and is part of the capital district. In the capital from Great Goritsy there is a highway passing through the airport. Another highway goes from the city to the south-east towards Sisak and Petrigny . The A11 motorway goes to the center of Zagreb.
History
The entire Sava Valley in present-day Zagreb has been inhabited since ancient times. Eight kilometers northeast of present-day Great Gorica was the Roman city of Andavtonia . The first mention of the Great Goritsa dates back to 1278 . In the Middle Ages and the New Age Velika Goritsa was the center of the “Noble community of Turopolje” . It was often subjected to Turkish invasions, as a result of which the local church, which was practically rebuilt in the middle of the 17th century, was severely damaged.
Historically, the main type of city economy is trade - fairs are regularly held on the main square. Despite the fact that the first school in the city appears in the XVIII century , it does not find the proper interest among local residents and is demolished in a few decades.
Velika Gorica is experiencing rapid economic growth at the end of the 19th century , when the territory of the city expanded. The old town square becomes the site of the horse trade, and King Tomislav Square is occupied by the stock market. Rich merchants build up the center of the city with their houses. The special merit in the development of the city belongs to the prefect Louis Josipovic, during which a whole series of state and public buildings were erected in Velika Gorica.
In 1901, the city is inhabited by 1041 inhabitants, the growth of the population gives impetus to the development of public transport connecting the center of Velika Goritsy with railway stations and industrial enterprises. The next stage in the development of the city refers to the post-war period , when the housing stock is actively expanding, which makes Velika Gorica a satellite town of Zagreb . In 1974, the city became one of the municipalities of Zagreb, and in 1995 it received city status.
Economy
The economic development of the Great-Highlanders is built on the basis of small business and agriculture. 1460 trade, 983 small and 17 medium and large enterprises are registered in the city.
