Biography
Born in the city of Malang in the Dutch East Indies (modern Indonesia ) on July 13, 1893 .
In 1923 she defended her Ph.D. thesis at the Willy-Commelin-Scholten Laboratory in Barna under the supervision of Johanna Westerdijk . In the dissertation, she revised the systematics of the most systematically complex genera Monilia , Oidium , Oospora, and Torula . First substantiated the independence of the genus Candida , based on micromorphological and cultural characteristics.
Already during the preparation of the dissertation, Burkhout's health problems worsened. She died on November 18, 1932 in The Hague .
