Story
For the past twenty years, Haru has worked as a librarian in Tokyo and finally reached retirement age. But before that, she was a school teacher in the most northern of the Japanese islands of Hokkaido . Before she even thought about how she could enjoy her newfound freedom, two policemen rang at her door to ask her some questions about one of her former students - Nobuto, who is a suspect in the murder case. It seems that they found Haru's address among Nobuto's things and really want to find out what kind of relationship she had with him and what she might know about his current whereabouts. Haru is shocked by what happened and decides to find out the details on the spot, again leaving for Hokkaido 20 years later. Her matured students, who are now under thirty, still live and work here. Conveniently, they did not disperse far from their childhood home, which facilitated her task. Manami, the only one of her pupils with whom Haru remained in contact, works in Sarobetsu Park, and she begins with her. Haru goes around everyone - there are not many, Naoki works in Sapporo , Yuka is a kindergarten teacher in the same city, Manae became a welder in the port of Wakkanai , and Isamu became an island policeman.
During this journey into the past, we learn that Haru is deeply concerned about her six students with various problems and disabilities, especially Nobuto, who stutters from childhood and lived without parents, raised by his uncle. She also taught children to sing, turning them into a close-knit talented vocal group. But after an accident involving one of the children, which killed her husband, Haru left the island. Years later, the trauma from her sudden departure still does not heal in the souls of the pupils. What happened? The key to the secret is the island policeman Kisuke Abe, who fought with his conscience after a fatal failure in service, which killed the hostage ...
