Biography
Born into a poor family, his mother was a factory worker. Early left an orphan. As a child, he made a living working as a street vendor of newspapers.
In 1899 he became a lawyer law firm. He began to be interested in the labor movement.
In the years 1903-1910 - a journalist, director of the Workers' Theater in Tampere . He participated in the general strike of 1905 , the February Revolution and the Civil War in Finland in 1918 . On November 1, 1905, from the balcony of the Tampere City Hall read the “Red Declaration” (Manifesto of the Finnish people) demanding civil liberties, democracy and labor rights.
After the defeat of the Reds in the Finnish Civil War and the beginning of the white terror, K. Kaatra hid first in the attic of his dacha, and then managed to escape to Sweden.
Creativity
He made his debut as a poet in 1902.
Author of collections of poems: "On the Threshold" (1903), "From Life" (1904), "Poems" (1905), "Pictures of a Big Strike and Other Working Songs" (1906), "At the Turning" (1906), a collection of poems "Songs of the lower classes" (1922). In the story “Red and White” (1919) K. Kaatra paints the civil war of 1918 in Finland, in the novel Mother and Son (1924), the life of a working-class quarter, with irony mocks the laws, morals and customs of bourgeois society.
In his works with great love depicts the life of urban lower classes. With his poetic creativity, the writer served the Finnish working class for 20 years; all his sympathies are on the side of the revolutionary working masses.
