Arnold, Friedrich

Friedrich Arnold ( , - or , ) - a famous German doctor , anatomist and physiologist . He was an honorary professor and head of the department of anatomy and physiology at the University of Heidelberg . He taught medicine at the University of Heidelberg at the same time as his elder brother, Johann Wilhelm Arnold (born in 1801 and died in 1873 ).

Friedrich Arnold studied anatomy under the leadership of Friedrich Tideman ( 1781 - 1861 ) and Vincent Fomann ( 1794 - 1837 ). He became a doctor of medicine on September 7, 1825 at the University of Heidelberg. A few years later he became an associate professor at this university. Since 1835 , he worked at universities in different cities and lands: in Zurich , Freiburg , Tubingen . In 1852 he returned to Heidelberg, already to the post of full professor and head of the department of anatomy and physiology of Heidelberg University. Shortly before his retirement, he received the title of honorary professor. After the resignation of Arnold, the post of professor and head of the department of anatomy and physiology of the University of Heidelberg took Karl Gegenbaur ( 1826-1903 ). [3]

The auricular branch of the vagus nerve was named after Arnold - “Arnold's nerve ”, after Arnold described a reflex cough in response to irritation of the skin of the auditory canal in the ear or the mucous membrane of the eardrum [4] . Other eponyms named after Arnold are the Arnold Ganglion (the auditory nerve ganglion) and the Arnold Canal (a hole in the temporal bone through which the auricular branch of the vagus nerve passes, that is, the Arnold nerve) [5] .

Arnold was also a respected private medical consultant in Heidelberg.
