Biography

Born in Peru. He graduated from the University of Miami with a bachelor of psychology. Later he graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Louisville with a specialization in urology [5] . In 1990-1992 He continued his studies at the Clinical Residency at Harvard Medical School with a clinical base at the Boston Children's Hospital, where he studied with the world-famous pediatric urological surgeons Alan Retik and Hardy Hendren. He was director of the Laboratory of Tissue Engineering and Cell Therapy at the Boston Children's Hospital [6] , where he was engaged in the cultivation of human tissues and organs to replace damaged ones due to diseases or defects.

Atala continued his work in tissue engineering and 3D organ printing at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) in 2004 [7] , where he led the team that raised the first bioengineered bladder implanted in humans [8] .

In 2011, he was elected a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences . Dr. Anthony Atala was named The Doctor of the Year by Scientific American for his contributions to the study of cell, tissue, and organ regeneration [9] .

Editor-in-chief of the journals Stem Cells-Translational Medicine (Scopus, SJR 1.64), Current Stem Cell Research and Therapy (Scopus, SJR 0.68) and Therapeutic Advances in Urology (Scopus, SJR 0.89).
