Biography
Born in Transylvania , the city of Bistrita . George was the eighth of fourteen children of the Greek Catholic priest Sebastian Koshbuk and his wife Maria.
He collected and translated folk legends , legends, tales, and jokes (“Blăstem de mamă”, “Fata Craiuluĭ din Cetini”, “Fulger”, “Laur Bălaur”, etc.). In 1890 he moved to Bucharest , where he published the Balade şi idile ( 1893 ) and Fire de tort ( 1896 ), published a lot of poems in magazines, and, on behalf of the Ministry of Education, compiled the history of the war of liberation.
Koshbuk introduced into Romanian literature a cheerful beginning unknown to Eminescu and his many imitators. According to the merits of a graceful and energetic verse, Koshbuk was considered the first among Romanian poets contemporary to him. His best work is the poem "The Wedding of Zamfira" ( rum. "Nunta Zamfirei" ).
In 1916 he was elected a full member of the Romanian Academy [1] .
He was buried in Bucharest at Bella Cemetery . In 1996, a bust of the poet (sculptor Konstantin Popovich) was installed in the Classics Alley in Chisinau .
