Biography

Vasily Izhevsky was born on June 4 (16), 1863 in Ryazan [1] . In 1887 he graduated from the Physics and Mathematics Department of Moscow University [2] , was left at the Department of Chemistry. Soon he was forced to leave the university due to participation in student performances. He worked as a chemist at the Nikolskaya Manufactory in Vladimir [3] . Since 1892, he taught at Moscow University, since 1895 - at the Moscow Agricultural Institute . Since 1899 - lecturer at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute (since 1905 - professor) [1] . He organized the department of metallurgy at the institute.

Author of work on blast furnace production, metallography , electrometallurgy and heat treatment. He explained the phenomenon of freezing of the charge in blast furnaces and proposed a way to eliminate it [1] . Created a number of reagents for etching thin sections (the so-called Izhevsky reagents ), widely used in metallography [2] . He developed several original designs of an electric furnace, a reversed gas generator, and a continuously operating vertical charcoal furnace [3] . He proposed a method of heating steel before quenching in molten salts [1] . Among his students are Soviet metallurgists I.P. Bardin [4] and N.P. Chizhevsky [5] .

He died on October 23, 1926 . He was buried in Kiev at the Lukyanovsky cemetery (plot number 21, row 11, place 10).
