Biography
Alexander Hoffman was born on February 20, 1927 in Moscow , in the family of gynecologist Heinrich Efimovich Hoffman - resident of the maternity hospital named after March 8 at the Semashko hospital, and in 1948-1958 - professor and head of the obstetrics and gynecology department of Vitebsk Medical Institute [1] . During World War II he was evacuated to Omsk , he graduated from high school there. Having returned, he entered the medical faculty of the 2nd Moscow Medical Institute , which he graduated in 1948. He passed a three-year clinical residency at the department of V. A. Gilyarovsky , after which he continued to engage in clinical and scientific activities in the psychiatric hospital named after Kashchenko . His teachers were P. M. Zinoviev , M. A. Chalisov and K. A. Skvortsov [2] .
In 1961 he defended his dissertation at the Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry on the subject “Clinic and differential diagnosis of alcoholic paranoids” (supervisor P. M. Zinoviev). In 1968 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Clinic, differential diagnosis, treatment of alcoholic hallucinosis." Since 1962 - researcher at the Moscow Research Institute of Psychiatry. In 1987, he headed the department of clinical narcology [1] .
His research interests include problems of mental disorders complicated by pathological forms of dependence. He is a major specialist in the field of drug psychiatry [2] . The author of more than 320 scientific papers, including a number of articles of the Great Russian Encyclopedia . Under his leadership, 39 candidate and 4 doctoral dissertations were defended. In the 1990s, he was the chief editor of the journal " Issues of Addiction ". Later he was a member of the editorial board of the journals Social and Clinical Psychiatry, Issues of Narcology, Narcology, and others. Member of the Board of the Russian Society of Psychiatrists and Chairman of the Ethics Committee of the Independent Psychiatric Association [1] .
