Creation History

Lust for Life , the fifth studio album of the singer, was officially released on July 21, 2017. A few months before the release, fans and the press were debating whether Del Rey was considering going on a world tour in support of the upcoming album. These disputes were due to the fact that in support of the previous album, Honeymoon , an official concert tour was not held. In an interview for Beats 1 radio, which took place on July 12, 2017, Del Rey was asked if she planned to organize a world tour, to which the singer could not answer anything concrete [5] . However, over the next few weeks, Lana Del Rey announced the dates of several concerts in the US and the UK. This short promotional tour took place from July to October 2017 and consisted of concerts in London [6] , in some cities in California [7] [8] [9] , in New York [10] , as well as in Liverpool and Glasgow [ 11] . In August, Del Rey went to Europe, where she performed at music festivals in Helsinki , Oslo , Gothenburg and Krakow .

On August 19, 2017 on Instagram, Lana Del Rey announced that she still plans to organize a full-fledged world concert tour in support of Lust for Life . Later, the performer shared information about the dates and cities of concerts, as well as the conditions for pre-ordering and purchasing tickets for the show [12] .

The dates for the North American part of LA to the Moon Tour were announced on September 27, 2017 [13] . On the same day, Del Rey announced that she would perform at four music festivals in South America [14] . Before the concerts of the North American part of the tour, the American singer Jeney Aiko and the American singer of Colombian descent Kali Uchis performed as the opening act. The dates of the Australian and European parts of the tour became known on October 16, 2017 [4] [15] .

On January 16, 2018, it was announced that the concerts of the tour in Australia would be opened by the American singer Børns , with whom Del Rey collaborated on the recording of his second studio album Blue Madonna [16] .

On March 9, 2018, Lana Del Rey admitted on Instagram that she admires the work of the American performer Cat Power , and delighted fans with a message that she would warm up the audience at concerts of the European part of the tour [17] .

In August 2018, it was announced that Lana Del Rey would come to Israel to perform at the Meteor festival on September 7 of that year [18] . This decision of the singer was criticized by the Palestinian community and the BDS movement. Del Rey said later that she would postpone her performance in Israel until she could perform for both Israeli and Palestinian fans, effectively canceling her concert at the Meteor festival. The performer explained the cancellation of the performance by the desire to “treat all fans equally” [19] .

Scene Design

The appearance of the stage at a concert in Boston on January 13

In an interview with MTV in October 2017, Del Rey said that the stage design will combine a whole host of details: references to beach paraphernalia, artificial plants and “beautiful moving structures” that give the scene a “classic charm” [20] . All details of the stage design became known only during the first concert on January 5, 2018.

The design of the stage was developed with the participation of Jason Ardison-West, Phil White and Stormy Whitby-Grubb. On the stage there are many scenery: palm trees, shrubs, rocks, deck chairs and a gilded piano, and behind the stage there is a large screen broadcasting visual effects. Swing suspended from the ceiling and a design of two triangles, made in the style of avant-garde architecture of the 1960s [21] .

Terence Cowley of The Boston Globe later wrote that Del Rey “transformed the scene into a miniature of her beloved California” [22] , while Reed Fisher of GoMN called the scene design “truly Los Angeles” and noted the quality of the floor projections [23] .

At the next concert in Atlanta on February 5, the singer during the performance did not hold back her tears because of the incident in Orlando, but assured the audience that she was all right and thanked them for their support [32] .

On April 17, after a concert in Antwerp, the fan managed to get over the fence and jump onto the backstage Lana Del Rey, knocking her down. [33] The guard stopped the further actions of the violator, the singer did not suffer [34] .
