Pavel Nikolaevich Pakhlov (born November 8, 1967 ) is a mathematician , a specialist in the field of particle physics, a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2011).

Biography

Born on November 8, 1967.

Since 1990, he has been working at the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics ( ITEP ), where he has gone from a senior researcher to the head of the laboratory.

Professor at the Department of Elementary Particle Physics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology ( MIPT ), gives a course in experimental physics, is the supervisor of graduate students and students of MIPT.

In 2006 - defended his doctoral dissertation, topic: “The Birth of Charmony in e + e- annihilation” (the academic title was Doctor of Physics and Mathematics was awarded in 2007), which was based on a discovery that caused great resonance in the Russian and international scientific community. In the works of P. N. Pakhlov, it was shown that the probability of pair production of charmonium in the annihilation of electrons and positrons exceeds the theoretical predictions by an order of magnitude. The results, later confirmed by American physicists, pushed dozens of theoreticians to new calculations to explain this amazing phenomenon. However, despite their significant efforts, experimental results still cannot be accurately described theoretically.

In 2011, he was elected a corresponding member of the RAS .

In 2016, he was nominated for election to the academicians of the RAS [2] .

Scientific activity

Specialist in particle physics.

The author of over three hundred scientific papers.

The main scientific results:

  • a unique experiment was set up to search for spatial anisotropy in β-decay and an upper limit was obtained on the anisotropy effect with record accuracy;
  • first discovered the process of pair production of charmonium in e + e−;
  • For the first time, the cross sections and kinematic characteristics of the processes e + e → J / ψ cc and J / ψ gg were measured, which laid the foundation for new approaches for calculating the production of charmonium;
  • two new states of charmonium have been discovered that are candidates for radial excitations of singlet scalar charmonium;
  • A prototype of a unique detector for registering muons and neutral kaons under conditions of high background loading of the experiment at the super-B-factory was developed and created.

He participated in international conferences, including a plenary report at the Rochester Conference - ICHEP XXXIII, Moscow 2006 “Charm and Charmonium: Decay, Spectroscopy and Production” ,.

Under his leadership, 9 thesis and 3 candidate dissertations were defended.

Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of the ITEP High Energy Physics Department, member of the ITEF Scientific and Technical Council and the ITEF Dissertation Council.

ITEP Team Leader in Belle and Belle-2 Experiments.

Three candidates of physical and mathematical sciences, T. AH. Aushev , T.U. Uglov and D.V. Liventsev, who defended their dissertations under the leadership of Pakhlov, won the contests of 2006, 2009, 2010 for the right to receive grants from the President of the Russian Federation for state support of young Russian scientists.

In 2006, T. AH. Aushev was awarded the RAS gold medal. In 2009, the prize for young scientists of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom was awarded to T. V. Uglov and its leader P. N. Pakhlov, and in 2010 to D. V. Liventsev and its leader P. N. Pakhlov.
