Biography

Svyatopolk in 1132 , was a prince in Polotsk . Svyatopolk left his brother - Izyaslav , going to Pereyaslavl . But soon the townspeople expelled Svyatopolk, probably they were dissatisfied with the departure of Izyaslav [3] , and called for the reign of the grandson of Vseslav the Wizard, Vasilk Svyatoslavich .

In 1135, Svyatopolk participated in a campaign with the brothers Vsevolod and Izyaslav to the Principality of Pereyaslav , occupied by their uncle Yuri Vladimirovich (Dolgoruky) [4] .

In 1137, Svyatopolk Mstislavich accompanied his brother Vsevolod from Novgorod to Pskov . In the winter of that year, Vsevolod died in Pskov [5] , and Svyatopolk Mstislavich [3] became the Pskov prince , who reigned there until 1140 [4] , when the Grand Duke Vsevolod Olgovich gave him and his brother, Vladimir Macesicz , the city of Berestye [4] .

In 1141–1142, Izyaslav handed over to his sister Agafya Mstislavna, the wife of Vsevolod Olgovich: “Ask the brother-in-law Novgorod the Great for his brother Svyatopolk”, and the grand duke sent Svyatopolk Mstislavich to Novgorod [3] . But in 1148 Izyaslav, who became the Grand Duke in 1146 , led Svyatopolk from Novgorod and put his son Yaroslav there , and Vladimir-Volynsky gave Svyatopolk.

In 1149, Svyatopolk participated with his brother in the war against Yuri Dolgoruky. In Vladimir-Volyn Svyatopolk Mstislavich was a prince for a short time, and ceded the reign to his brother Izyaslav, expelled from Kiev by Yuri Dolgoruky.

In 1150 he owned Lutsk . When Izyaslav with the help of the Hungarians again moved to Yuri, Svyatopolk Mstislavich accompanied his brother to protect him from the Galician prince Vladimir Volodarevich , who followed the army of Izyaslav. In the same year, he helped his brother in the fight against Yuri and again received Vladimir-Volynsky, where he sat until his death.

In 1152, Grand Duke Izyaslav Mstislavich took a campaign against Vladimir Volodarevich. Svyatopolk Mstislavich came to his brother in Peresopnytsya with his army, but Izyaslav sent him back to Vladimir-Volynsky. In the same year, Svyatopolk Mstislavich went with Izyaslav to Novgorod against the son of Yuri - Vasilka, but this campaign ended in peace.

In 1153 he participated in the campaign of Izyaslav against the Galician Prince Yaroslav Vladimirovich Osmomysl .

Historiographers note that Svyatopolk probably did not have special abilities and did not have personal initiative. He never did anything on his own and only helped others, mainly his brother Izyaslav.

Svyatopolk is mentioned in Novgorod birch bark letter No. 850 [6] ; in the text of the letter to the boyar Pyotr (Petrok) Mikhalkovich, we are talking about the settlement of the conflict related to the land, in the transfer of which Svyatopolk somehow participated. Judging by the fact that he was named by name (and not “prince”, if it was a question of the current prince), the letter dates back to the time shortly after his exile - 1148 .

From 1143/1144 he was married to Euphemia , the daughter of Prince Olomouc Otton II of Black [7] .
