Biography

Barry Simon was born on April 16, 1946 in New York . In 1965, he became a laureate of the William Putnam mathematical contest. In 1966 he graduated from Harvard University , and in 1970 received a Ph.D. from Princeton University . In Princeton, together with Elliot Lieb, he worked on the theory of phase transitions using the Thomas - Fermi and Hartree-Fock approximations. In January 1971, Simon married Martha Katsin, Ph.D. and professor of mathematics at the University of California at Northridge . Simon later became a professor at the California Institute of Technology , where he works today.
