Biography

He was born in 1961 in the city of Kohtla-Järve in Estonia , but after three years his family moved to Tallinn . He was engaged in hockey and football, in 1973 he became interested in fencing. The first coach was Valery Romanov, and later Claudius Yadlovsky worked with him.

After graduating from high school won the USSR Championship among juniors. He continued to play sports both while serving in the army and after it, however, he soon came to the conclusion that he could not become a world-class athlete and decided to follow the coach’s path.

In 1982 he created the first group of fencing at the sports school of the Sea District of Tallinn . The future Olympic champion Oksana Ermakova [1] [2] [3] also got into the group of his students.

In the early 1990s, he was the head coach of the women's national team of independent Estonia . The team won the bronze at the World Championships in 1993, and Ermakova became the champion in the individual standings.

Nevertheless, in 1993, due to disagreements with the sports leadership, he was forced to leave Estonia and move to Sweden , and in 1997 he became the head coach of the national team. There he worked with Peter Vanki and Eric Johansson, prize winners of the world championships [3] .

He is fluent in Estonian, Swedish and speaks English [4] .

Coached Nikolai Novoselov , two-time world champion. In 2013, he again became the head coach of the Estonian team [5] .
