Ackar ( Arabic محافظة عكار ) is the northernmost governorate (province) of the Lebanese Republic , formed in 2014 by secession from the Northern governorate [1] . It includes only one district of the same name - Akkar , which in turn is divided into 126 municipalities [2] . The administrative center of the province is the city of Halba .

In the south-west and southeast, respectively, it borders on the Northern Governorate and the Governorate of Baalbek-Hermel of Lebanon , in the North and North-East - with the Syrian provinces of Tartus and Homs , in the West it has access to the Mediterranean Sea .
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs estimates that in 2016 the population of the governorate was 378,937 people, among whom 26.6% were refugees of the civil war in Syria and 6.7% were Palestinian refugees [3] .
