Biography

A native of an aristocratic family originating from Burgundy , the elder brother of the King’s Foreign Minister (1774-1787), Charles Gravier de Vergenne .

He began serving as an official in his native Dijon . In 1775 he was appointed ambassador to Switzerland and signed an alliance treaty with the Swiss in Solothurn . Having been ambassador to Switzerland until 1777, the Marquis de Vergenne was appointed ambassador to Portugal , in 1779 - to Venice , in 1786 - again to Switzerland. He worked for the post of Ambassador of France in three countries for almost 15 years. Recalled in connection with the French Revolution , the Marquis de Vergenne was imprisoned in the Paris prison of Saint-Lazare with the outbreak of terror . In June 1794, he was executed on the guillotine with his son, Charles Gravier de Vergenne (1751-1794).

The Marquis was married to his cousin, Jeanne Chevignard Chavigny from a noble family. Her father was the chairman of the parliament (judiciary) of Besancon , and her uncle was a famous diplomat. The granddaughter of the Marquise de Vergerenne, Claire, became the famous secular lady of the First Empire , and later a memoirist, she went down in history as Madame Remus (by the name of her husband ).
