Biography
The son of Leonardino della Scala and the grandson of Baldwin della Scala . Unlike his grandfather, at first he did not engage in politics , devoting himself to the wool trade . For a long time he remained a middle-class merchant . Subsequently, he began to participate in politics on the side of the Ghibellines . From the emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, he received the post of imperial vicar of the fortress of Ostilio , and then became the commander of the city of Cherea [1] . Only at the end of his life he managed to significantly improve his financial situation by establishing profitable trade contacts with the merchants of the Venetian Republic , by intermarrying with the patrician clan Giustiniani . He died between 1228 and 1248 [2] [4] .
