Catholic church (2017 view)

The Catholic community received permission to build the church in 1861 . The building was built on the corner of Sadovaya (now M. Gorky) and Vvedenskaya (now November 7th) streets. The neo - Gothic style architectural appearance was a typical Catholic religious building . The appearance of the church is associated with the residence in Orel of people of Polish descent, including those exiled here for participating in the national liberation movement . It was closed in 1938. As a result of subsequent rebuilding, the building lost its original decoration. At present (2017) it is used as the production premises of the Orelprodmash plant. Attempts by investors in the 2000s to restore the original appearance of the church were unsuccessful [4] [5] .

In 2004, in the Zavodskoy district on Kirpichnaya street (the district of the Sovremennik cinema), a new Catholic church was built and July 3, 2005 was consecrated by Metropolitan Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz in the name of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary [2] [6] .

Muslim Central Prayer House

Muslim Prayer House

In 2011, rumors about the construction of a mosque in the city were intensely exaggerated in Orel. Places for construction were called: this is the Naugorsk highway, later Livenskaya street. This was preceded by two requests to the city administration (2009, 2010) for approval of the construction of a mosque. But the requests were rejected for a reason lying in the field of urban policy. Currently (2017) in the city on Depovskaya street, 4 (Vygonka district) there is a central Muslim house of worship. This is a rented building, to which a special extension was made. The capacity of the prayer house is about 400 parishioners. The second house of worship is located near the central market. It was open for fivefold prayers by market workers, including many Muslims [9] [10] [11] .

Jewish Assembly House

Synagogue

The construction of the synagogue was carried out with donations from 1909 to 1911 according to the project of the provincial engineer F.V. Gavrilov on the site of the building of the Jewish ritual mikvah that existed from 1905. The official opening took place in 1912. After working a little over ten years, in 1923 it was closed. After the closure, various organizations were located here: labor exchange , fire department, police, school, OSOAVIAHIM flying club . The internal layout of the building has been completely lost, and the dome crowning it has not been preserved. Recently, this building housed the Oryol Road College. The building is an object of cultural heritage of regional significance [2] [4] .

As a result of litigations between the religious organization and the regional government, a settlement agreement was signed in March 2016 and on November 21 the synagogue building was returned to the Jewish community of the Oryol region. The synagogue is located on Sovetskaya Street (formerly 2nd Nikitskaya), 16 [12] .
