Shumova-Simanovskaya, Ekaterina Olympovna

Ekaterina Olympovna Shumova-Simanovskaya ( 1852 - 1905 ) - Russian physiologist . One of the first women in Russia to be a physiologist. She took the most active part in the experiments that brought IP Pavlov world fame and the Nobel Prize [1] [2] .

Biography

Born on June 6 ( 18 ), 1852 in Samara . Father - Olympi Alekseevich Shumov (November 3, 1820 - February 14, 1869), hereditary honorary citizen (1838) of Gavrilovsky Posad , merchant of the 1st guild . Mother - Alexandra Mikhailovna Shumova, daughter of Rostov 1st guild of merchant Mikhail Maksimovich Pleshanov. It was the seventh child in the family [3] .

In 1872-1877 she studied in Geneva, Zurich, Paris and Bern. In 1877 she defended her doctoral dissertation at the University of Bern . Upon returning to Russia in 1879, she obtained permission to conduct independently medical practice [1] [2] .

She assisted I.P. Pavlova during operations with imaginary feeding and getting gastric juice secreted by the dog's body. The use of this juice for medicinal purposes Pavlov actively promoted and sought to increase its production [4] .

She became the first female resident of the Medical-Surgical Academy [5] . After several years of working together with I. P. Pavlov, she became a free-practice doctor.

The husband is the founder of otolaryngology in Russia, Nikolai Petrovich Simanovsky .

The younger sister is a chemist-physiologist Nadezhda Olympovna Ziber- Shumova [6] [7] .

She died suddenly on 3 ( 16 ) July 1905 in her estate Zorka . She was buried in the village of Ruchi at the entrance to the Church of St. George . Reburied at the Tikhvin cemetery of the Alexander Nevsky Monastery [8] [1] .

Interesting Facts

In memory of Ekaterina Simanovskaya, Nikolai Petrovich Simanovsky and the younger sister Nadezhda founded a gymnasium named after her in the estate of Zorka, the first secondary school in Krestetsky district . Nikolai Petrovich Simanovsky also opened a hospital in the village of Borok and financed the construction of the Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos in the village of Ruchi , near the first tomb of the spouse [4] .
