The son and successor of Mariano II. At first he ruled under the tutelage of Tozorato degli Uberti, the leaning nobleman of Pisa. The diminutive nickname of Kyan is due to his young age upon accession to the throne.
In 1297, Pope Boniface VIII proclaimed the creation of the kingdom of Sardinia and Corsica, with which he invested Jaime II of Aragon in exchange for his rejection of Sicily. From this event began the conquest of Sardinia by Aragon.
In 1300, in exchange for a promise of protection and military assistance, Giovanni transferred (or sold) to the republic of Pisa a third of Cagliari ’s jurisdiction, inherited by Arborea as a result of the 1258 partition. Silver mines and part of the public lands also became the property of the Pisans, which caused popular discontent.
In 1304, Judge Giovanni was killed by the inhabitants of Arborea rebelling against him.
Wife (wedding in 1287) - Dzhakomina (d. After 1329), daughter of Ugolino della Gerardeska . Daughter Giovanna died in infancy (in 1308).
Giovanni from different lovers had two illegitimate sons:
- Mariano III
- Andreotto.
The two of them inherited the throne of Arborea.
