He studied under Friedrich Grützmacher at the Leipzig Conservatory . In 1866 - 1875 cellist of the Florentine quartet . After leaving the quartet, he taught for a year at the Vienna Conservatory and played in the Vienna Palace Opera Orchestra , during the same period he performed as part of the Helmesberger Quartet - in particular, participated in the premiere of Johannes Brahms Piano Quartet No. 3 Op.60 ( November 18, 1875 , part the piano was performed by the author) [1] . Then he moved to the Meiningen Palace Orchestra, with whom he toured a lot as a soloist, and finally, since 1884 he played in the Bavarian Royal Orchestra (while teaching at the Munich Conservatory ).
