Karaban, Vyacheslav Ivanovich

Vyacheslav Ivanovich Karaban (born July 16, 1947) is a Ukrainian translation scholar and linguist. Doctor of Philology, Professor. Academician of the Academy of Higher School of Ukraine since 2005

Biography

Born in Novokuznetsk, Kemerovo region. (Russia). In 1971 he graduated from the Department of Translators of the Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​of Kharkov University. From 1971 to 1973 - translation officer in the Armed Forces. Since 1973, 1976 - graduate student of the Department of English Philology, Faculty of Romano-Germanic Philology, KSU named after T. Shevchenko. From 1976 to 1979, he was a lecturer in the department of English philology at the university, and from 1980 to 1981, an assistant professor in this department. In 1978, he defended his thesis on "Aspects of the surface connectivity of the English text." From 1981 to 1987 and from 1989 to 1992, he was the head of the department of the English language, from 1987 to 1989 he was a senior researcher at the same department, from 1992 to 1993 he was the head of the department communication and linguistic studies. In 1990, he defended his doctoral dissertation “Complex Speech Units” (specialties “Germanic Languages” and “General Linguistics”). From 1997 to 2010 - head of the department of theory and practice of translation from English KNU. T. Shevchenko; now a professor in the same department.

Scientific activity

Spheres of scientific interests: translation studies, contrastive linguistics, ethnolinguistics, language theory, lexicography, history of staying ready in Ukraine.

Author and co-author of about 120 scientific and methodological works, in particular, the monograph “Complex speech units: English asyndetic polypredicative formations” (1989), the textbook “Theory and Practice of Translation from English into Russian” (2004), co-author of 12 textbooks on theory and practice translation, compiled by the English-Ukrainian Law Dictionary (2003) and the Ukrainian-English Law Dictionary (2004), translator of 3 scientific monographs from Ukrainian in English.

He prepared 17 candidates of sciences and 2 doctors of sciences.

Member of two specialized councils for testing dissertations for the degree of doctor (candidate) of philological sciences at KNU. T. Shevchenko. Member of the European Linguistic Society.

Laureate of the Yaroslav the Wise Award of the Higher School of Economics of Ukraine (2010).
