Biography

One of the best engravers of his time. He studied painting with Jerome and Bonn , later with Martine and Aprikel-Dupont copper carving, etching and engraving.

Soon he showed his rare talent in prints , with accuracy and great taste reproducing paintings of ancient and newest painters, the ability to engrave paintings of a coloristic direction, especially Rembrandt . The manner of his engraving is the so-called mixed, that is, consisting in the joint use of a needle, etching with strong vodka and a cutter [5] .

In 1868, Waltner received the Roman Prize , which allowed him to stay in Rome . He was awarded many prizes and honors.

In 1888 he became an honorary member of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts [6] . In 1899 he was awarded the Officer Order of the Legion of Honor [7] [8] .

Since 1908 - member of the Academy of Fine Arts of France .

Waltner was a professor at the National School of Fine Arts [9] and co-founder of the National Association of French Artists (Société nationale des beaux-arts) [10] .

Among his works, especially appreciated by amateurs, are: portraits of Baron de Vic (from Rubens's painting), Infanta Margarita (from Velazquez ), Alfred de Musset (from David Angers ), Countess Bark (with Rello ), Rembrandt , etc.
