Contrary to its name, Black Isle is not an island, but a peninsula surrounded on three sides by bays: Cromarty-Firth in the north, Boli-Firth in the south and Mory-Firth in the east; in the west, the border of the peninsula runs along several rivers. The Konon River separates the village of Marybor, a mile from Dingwall, from the village of Konon Bridge, which is considered the first (from the west) settlement in Black Isle. The south-western border of the territory is defined in different sources in different ways: either through a small tributary of the River Boli, which divides the town of Pain in Inverness and Mure-of-Ord in Ross and Cromartie on Black Isle, demarcating these two territories and marking the beginning of Black -Ayla; or directly along the Pain River, thus including Pain in the Black Isle territory, although officially this locality belongs to Iverness [1] . This territory, according to the encyclopedia “Britannica”, received its name due to the snowless winters characteristic of it, as a result of which the local land, in contrast to the surrounding areas, remained black at this time of year.

Black Isle was one of the first territories of the northern part of the highlands of Scotland, which underwent agricultural reforms after the deportation of the Scottish Highlanders , and in the XIX century it was intensively settled by sheep farmers from the lowland part of the country. In 2002, protests against the introduction of genetic engineering technologies into agriculture were held on the peninsula [2] .

Earlier in the territory of Black Isle were Chanonri-of-Ross Castle and the fortress of Ormond. Chanonri of Ross was completely destroyed in the XVIII century, by now there are no ruins left. Only small ruins remained from Ormond [3] [4] .

The population of Black Isle is mainly employed in the agricultural and tourism sectors of the economy; In the past, fishing and sandstone mining also played an important role. Wineries and breweries are located on the peninsula [5] .
