Port Alberni ( English Port Alberni ) is a city in the province of British Columbia , Canada . In 2016, the population of the city was 17 678 people [1] .

Geographical position
Port Alberni is located on the island of Vancouver , 195 km north of Victoria. It is located in the Alberni fiord, which was named after Don Pedro de Alberni, a Spanish officer commanding the Nutka garrison. In the center of Port Alberni there is a marina [1] . Port Alberni Airport (CBS8) is located 11 km northwest of the city.
History
Hudson Bay employees began trading in fur on the banks of Sanich and Nutka in the 1850s. English traders built a sawmill in 1860. After World War II, the territory became a center for logging. Port Alberni was incorporated as a city in 1967. The modern settlement appeared as a result of the merger of the cities of Port Alberni (incorporated in 1912) and Alberni (incorporated in 1913) [1] .
In 1964, the cities were affected by the tsunami, about 375 houses were damaged. By the 1970s, Port Alberni had the highest per capita income in Canada, thanks to fishing and forest. In the 1980-1990s, the forest industry declined. Since the 1990s, the mills have been modernized, they began to produce more specialized products [1] .
Population
In 2016, 17,678 people lived in Port Alberni (49.1% were men, 50.9% were women). The total population along with the suburbs of Cherry and Beaver Creek was 26,569. The population density was 894.7 people per km². Population growth in Port-Alberni since 2006 was 0.4% (on average in the province of British Columbia, 5.6%). 15.1% of the city’s population were children under the age of 14, 24.2% were people of retirement age (65 years and older) [2] .
Among 15,000 people over 15 years old, 54.3% live in a couple (42.8% - married, 11.5% - in civilian cohabitation), 25% - have never been married. There were a total of 8120 households. The median per capita income in 2015 was $ 28,599, the median household income was $ 50,823, and $ 68,648 per family [2] .
In 2006, among the population over 15 years old, 29.6% had no education, 27.3% had a high school diploma, 16.3% had a certificate of employment or a trade diploma, 16.0 - a college degree, 7 , 1% - university degree or degree [3] .
