Syndyurlu Koba

Syndyurlu Koba - a small karst cave , which is located on the mountain Syundyurlu Kobas , in the Baydar Valley , 8 km east of the village. Novobobrovskoe ( Crimea ). The name Syundyurlu-Koba in translation means "extinct / extinct cave ", from "syundu" - to fade away. The legend testifies that here in 1475 in the second cave hall, where the corridor which now collapsed led, found refuge the Genoese , who escaped from the fortresses defeated by the Turks. The enemies found them, but could not get inside the cave. Then, having spread a fire at the entrance, they killed the Genoese with smoke. Another explanation of the toponym is more prosaic and is descriptive of the mountain range: from the Turk. “Sundurmak” - “to stretch, to stretch”.

Description

The cave has two large entrances, from which the floor decreases steeply and leads to a large hall with a length of about 50 and a width of about 20 m. The inclined corridor gradually goes to a depth of 35 m from the surface. In the cave there are practically no streak formations. The ancient groundwater flow, under the influence of which the cave was formed, was directed from north to south, while now the surface and underground watercourses of the region are oriented in the opposite direction - from south to north. The floor is littered with boulders collapsed from the ceiling, one of them weighing at least 2 tons. Some of the walls of the cave seem to be painted with colorful colors - red, green, yellow. From the hall into the depths of the mountain there is an inclined narrow corridor that abuts against the blockage. The corridor led to the second cave hall, whose arches collapsed in the 20th century.

In the middle of the Syndyurlu cave there are two small lakes with water. At its far end, human bones are still found. Vasily Kondaraki , who visited the cave in 1876, suggested that they belonged to the Genoese strangled by the Turks with the help of bonfires laid out at the entrance. Archaeological explorations carried out in the area of the cave indicate that it was used in the VIII-X centuries. like housing.

At the northern entrance to the cave, in a small grotto , a multilayer fireplace was revealed. Obviously, it was in the grotto that the shepherds escaped from the weather, and in the hall they covered the herd. Syndyurlu-Koba is one of the few monuments of the Bronze Age near Sevastopol . They also suggest that in the first hall there was a pagan sanctuary, transformed in the 9th-10th centuries into a Christian chapel .
