General Information
Fernando has a twin brother named Jose Maria and a younger brother Ignacio, who also played tennis professionally, but did not achieve outstanding results.
He started playing tennis at the age of eight. Favorite coating is soil. He is friends in the world of tennis with Carlos Moya .
Sports career
On the ATP tour, Vicente made his debut in April 1996, when through qualification he got into the main draw of the tournament in Barcelona . In his first match at such a level, he beat compatriot Emilio Sanchez , and in the second round he lost to No. 17 in the world at that time, Todd Martin . In October, Fernando first goes to the quarter finals in Tours - at a tournament in Marbella . In March 1997, he reached the same stage in a tournament in Casablanca . In September of that year, a 20-year-old Spaniard first climbed the top hundred in the world ranking.
In February 1998, Vicente won the first Challenger Tournament of his career in Singapore . In March, he played in the quarter finals of the ATP tournament in Casablanca, and in April in Prague. In May, Fernando reached the quarter finals at the Masters series tournament in Rome . He then made his debut in Grand Slam tournaments , playing in the French Open . In the first round, Vicente defeated Mark Woodford , and in the second round he lost to the finalist of the draw Alex Corretha . In July, he reached the semi-finals of the tournament in Stuttgart .
