Regensburg synagogue

The original Regensburg synagogue was built from 1210 to 1227 in the Old Roman style in the city of Regensburg , in the south of Germany , on the site of a former Jewish hospital, in the center of the ghetto where the Neue Pfarre church in Neupfarrplatz today stands. Two engravings by Albrecht Altdorfer depicting the interior of the synagogue shortly before its destruction on February 22, 1519 are the first images of architectural structures in a European engraving. In 1519, after the death of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I , who defended Jews in imperial cities in exchange for significant taxes from them, the city of Regensburg, who blamed the prosperous Jewish community for its economic failures, expelled 500 Jews from the city. The Jews themselves destroyed the interiors of their synagogue, on the site of which a chapel was built in honor of the Virgin Mary. According to the chronicles, the deported Jews settled under the patronage of the Duke of Ludwig X of Bavaria , on the other side of the Danube , in the Stadt-am-Hof district and in the villages around. Of these, they were expelled in the same century.

In 1669, Jews were again allowed to live in Regensburg, but only on April 2, 1841 the community had its own new synagogue. In 1907, however, it was destroyed due to fear of collapse of the building. In 1912, it was rebuilt in another place, then more than 600 Jews lived in the city. This synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis on November 9, 1938 during Kristallnacht .

A new building is currently under construction for the Jewish community, which will also have a place for a synagogue. Construction is carried out at the same place where the synagogue destroyed in 1938 stood. The completion of construction is planned for 2019. 10 different architectural bureaus submitted their project to the competition, the winner was Volker Staab from Berlin . The synagogue itself will be designed for 200 people, in addition, it is planned to build premises for the library, cafes and seminar rooms. The project cost is estimated at € 6 million, a third of which is allocated by the city; Part of the cost is also paid by private sponsors and directly the federal state of Bavaria. [one]
