Biography
Born in the castle Callenberg in Coburg . The younger (third) son of Karl Edward (1884-1954), the last reigning Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1900-1918), and Princess Victoria Adelaide Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glucksburg (1885-1970). The elder brothers are Johann Leopold, crown prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1906-1972), and Prince Hubertus (1909-1943).
On November 14, 1918, during the November Revolution in Germany, Duke Carl Edouard of Saxe-Coburg-Gothic was forced to abandon the Duke’s throne.
In 1938, Prince Frederick Josiah joined the Wehrmacht , participated in the occupation of Czechoslovakia , Poland and France . In 1941, he participated in military operations against Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union . In the winter of 1941, the prince became seriously ill . After recovering with the rank of oberleutenant, he fought in the Caucasus. In 1944, Prince Frederick Josiah served as an ordinary officer of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel on the French coast. In June 1944, the prince served in Denmark under the command of General Hermann von Hanneken , in May 1945 he was captured by the British, but was released in the autumn of that year.
Prince Friedrich Josiah, being the third and youngest of the sons of the duke Carl Edward of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha , could not count on becoming head of the ducal house of Saxe-Coburg-Goth. Crown Prince Johann Leopold (1906-1972), the eldest son of Carl Edward , twice held in morganatic marriages, in 1932 renounced his rights to the ducal title. Prince Hubertus (1909–1943), the second son of Carl Edward, died in battle in Ukraine in 1943, leaving no children.
In 1946, Prince Frederick left Germany for Sweden to visit his sister Sibylle , wife of the Swedish prince Gustav-Adolf . From 1946, he began working at the Swedish shipping company Johnson Line AB, and from 1948 at WR Grace & Co in San Francisco ( USA ). In 1951, the prince worked on the shipping company in Santos ( Brazil ), and in 1952 he returned to Germany and worked in the shipping company’s Hamburg office.
On March 6, 1954 , after the death of his father Carl Edward , Prince Frederick Josiah became the new head of the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha and the titular duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
Since 1958, the prince again worked in the Swedish company «Johnson Line AB» in Buenos Aires . In 1964, the prince returned to Germany, first lived in Hamburg for three years, then in Coburg from 1967 , and then moved to the town of Grain in Austria.
On January 23, 1998, 79-year-old Friedrich Josiah of Saxe-Coburg-Gothic died in the Amstetten hospital. He was buried at Colleberg Castle in Coburg . His title and property was inherited by his eldest son, Prince Andreas .
Marriages
On January 25, 1942 in Kassel, Friedrich Josiah married his first marriage to his cousin, Countess (March 13, 1921 - March 1, 2003), the only daughter of Count Hans Solms-Barutsky (1893-1972) and Princess Caroline Matilda Sonderburg-Glucksburg (1894-1972). The couple divorced September 19, 1946 [3] . They had one son:
- Andreas, Prince of Saxe-Coburg-Gothic (born March 21, 1943), has been the current head of the house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha since 1998 .
February 14, 1948 in San Francisco, Friedrich Josiah again married Denise Henriette de Mural (December 14, 1923 - April 25, 2005). they had three children [3] :
- Princess Maria Claudia Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (May 22, 1949, San Francisco - February 5, 2016), married since 1971 to Gion Schaefer (born July 20, 1945), two children
- Princess Beatrice Charlotte of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (born July 15, 1951, Bern ), husband since 1977, Prince Frederick Ernst of Saxe-Meiningen (January 21, 1935 - July 13, 2004), two children
- Prince Adrian Vincent Edward of Saxe-Coburg-Gothic (October 18, 1955, Coburg - August 30, 2011, Bern ), 1st wife (1984–1993) Leia Rinderknecht (born January 5, 1960), 2nd wife since 1997 Gertrude Krieg (born March 18, 1958). Two sons from the first marriage.
On September 17, 1964, Friedrich Josiah and Denise divorced. On October 30, 1964 in Hamburg, he married Kathrin Bremme for the third time (April 22, 1940 - July 13, 2011). The third marriage was childless [3] .

Awards
On November 23, 1988, Prince Frederick Josiah Saxe-Coburg-Goth received the title of honorary citizen of Grain in Austria for his services to the restoration of the castle of Grainburg [4] .
