Biography
The second son of Adolf IV , Earl of Schauenburg and Holstein, and his wife Heilwig von der Lippe.
After his father retired to a monastery on August 13, 1239, Gerhard I and his elder brother Johann assumed control of his counties under the tutelage of his uncle, Duke Schleswig Abel .
In 1261, Adolph IV died, and his sons divided the inheritance. In this case, Gerhard I received Storman, Plön and County Shauenburg. He made Itzehoe his residence.
Gerhard I participated in the war with the Danes, won Rendsburg and Segeberg, which he handed over to his brother. In 1262, he won the Battle of Lohaide.
