Created January 16, 1979, registered in the District of Columbia . The organization is staffed by diplomatic staff from the Department of State and other US government agencies. AIT Director has the rank of ambassador and the corresponding powers and privileges.
AIT is headquartered in Arlington County (Virginia) . It has offices in Taipei and Kaohsiung .
AIT represents US interests in Taiwan and other territories under the control of the Republic of China . He is charged with resolving visa issues and consular services for American expat citizens.
On the Taiwan side, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representation in the United States has TECRO (until 1994, the Coordinating Council for North American Affairs, CCNAA).
The activities of these two organizations served as a model for the development of relations between Taiwan and countries that do not officially recognize the Republic of China. So, Russian-Taiwanese relations are in the department, respectively, of the Moscow-Taipei Coordination Commission for Economic and Cultural Cooperation (from the Russian Federation ) and the Taipei-Moscow Coordination Commission for Economic and Cultural Cooperation (from Taiwan).
