Taiheiki ( 太平 記 Tale of the Great World ) is a Japanese historical feudal epic of the second half of the 14th century, the largest work written in the Gunka genre and, along with Heike-monogatari, is the main example of narrative genre of Japanese feudal literature of the 13th-16th centuries.
Structurally, Taiheiki is divided into three parts. Scrolls 1–12 tell of the birth of Emperor Go-Daigo’s plans to overthrow the Sikken (Shogun regents), the actual rulers of the country. The 13–21 scrolls are dedicated to the events of the Nambokutyo period , the war between the Northern Court of Asikagi Takaudzi in Kyoto and the Southern Court of Emperor Go-Daigo in Yoshino near Nara . At the center of the narrative of 22–40 scrolls is the victory of the Northern Dynasty and the establishment of the Muromachi Shogunate .
Taiheiki also contains a large number of fake short stories and over 60 setsuwa Buddhist tales.
