Gudelman, Yosef

Yosef Gudelman ( Yiddish יוסף גודלמאַן - Yoysef Goodlman ; December 7, 1862 , Attacks , Soroc County , Bessarabian Region - December 17, 1947 , New York ) - Jewish teacher, translator and poet. Father Gersh Gudelman .

Biography

In 1878 he graduated from the state Russian school [1] . He worked as a teacher in Edinets ( Khotinsky district ). In 1883-1886 he served in the Russian army . After demobilization, he taught in Medzhibozh ( Letichevsky district of Podolsk province ), where he married Molke Fateles ( English Mollie Goodelman , 1865-1947) [2] . In 1893 he opened a private Russian school in Ataki , was its director until 1906, he taught Russian . In 1906 he emigrated with his wife and children to America , where a year earlier his three sons settled - Isrul-Morthe (later a teacher and children's writer), Arn (sculptor and book graphic artist) and Ersh (editor, poet and satirist). He was the secretary of the trade union of bakery workers.

He began his literary work at the end of the 19th century, published Yiddish poetry in various periodicals in Russia . He continued to publish poetry after emigrating to America, in 1911-1917 he published a number of translations from Russian poetry in the New York newspaper Frye Arbeter Stim ( free working voice ). A separate book was his translation of the poem by M. Yu. Lermontov "Demon" (1923).
