Biography
Valentin Pavlovich Luzgin was born on November 23, 1932. He graduated from the Moscow Steel Institute , after graduating from the institute in 1956, he remained at the university as a junior research fellow at the Steel Metallurgy Department and worked for almost all his life at MISiS. While working at MISiS, he served as dean of the FPK, vice-rector for international relations, dean of the faculty of metallurgy of ferrous metals and alloys, head of the department of metallurgy of steel. From 1977 to 1980, V.P. Luzgin worked in the Arab Republic of Egypt as an adviser to the rector of the El-Tabba Metallurgical Institute
In 1963 he defended his thesis on the development of a new method for measuring oxygen activity in metal and slag melts using high-temperature galvanic cells. In 1975 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic "Gases in steel and the quality of metal smelted by modern steelmaking processes."
Scientific and educational activities
V.P. Luzgin, a specialist in the field of steelmaking processes, is one of the authors of a new scientific field - the application of the EMF method and high-temperature oxygen-concentration elements to study the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of pyrometallurgical processes and systems.
Under the scientific supervision of V.P. Luzgina by the staff and graduate students of the department, together with employees of enterprises - the Cherepovets and Novolipetsk metallurgical plants in different years, carried out research work devoted to one of the main research areas of the department - the study of the behavior of gases: oxygen, hydrogen and nitrogen in the processes of smelting and continuous casting and improving these processes.
V.P. Luzgin published 180 scientific papers, received 15 certificates of authorship, and 14 candidate dissertations were defended under his leadership. The results of scientific research V.P. Luzgin summarized in five monographs. He gave lectures to students in the courses "Theory and Technology of Steelmaking Processes" and "Extra-furnace steel processing", he prepared and published seven textbooks (independently and co-authored).
Recently, Valentin Pavlovich has been actively working on the relationship of the energy intensity of metallurgical processes with the amount of CO emissions and evidence of the need to take into account the impact of energy on the problem of “sustainable development”.
Recognition
For the development and implementation of domestic oxygen probes for steelmaking technologies V.P. Luzgin and co-authors were awarded the Prize of the Council of Ministers of the USSR . In 1997 he was awarded the badge "For excellent success in work" , in the same year he was awarded the honorary title "Honored Worker of Science of the Russian Federation . "
