Biography

Adolf was born in Stadthagen (Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe ). The eldest son of George, Prince Schaumburg-Lippe (1846-1911), and his wife, Princess Maria Anna of Saxe-Altenburg (1864-1918).

On May 8, 1893, after the death of his grandfather Adolf I and the accession to the princely throne, Father George Adolf became the Crown Prince of Schaumburg-Lippe. On April 29, 1911, after the death of his father George, the 28-year-old Adolf II inherited the princely throne of Schaumburg-Lippe.

On November 15, 1918, after the defeat of Germany in the First World War and the November Revolution, Prince Adolf Schaumburg-Lippe, like all German monarchs, was forced to abdicate. The Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe was abolished and renamed the free state of Schaumburg-Lippe . Aodlf Schaumburg-Lippe was sent to the Brioni Islands off the coast of Istria.

During his reign in the Principality, Adolf contributed to the development of a medical resort in Bad Ailsen .

Marriage and death

On January 10, 1920, in Berlin, Adolf Schaumburg-Lippe married actress Elizabeth Francis (Ellen) Bischoff-Courthouse (October 6, 1894 - March 26, 1936). Their morganatic marriage was childless.

The prince and princess Schaumburg-Lippe died in a plane crash in Sumpango ( Mexico ) on March 26, 1936 . Their plane, Ford Trimotor , flying from Mexico City to Ciudad de Guatemala [1] [2] , crashed near the volcano Popocatepetl .

The newspaper The New York Times of March 27, 1936 reported that all fourteen people on board the plane, ten tourists from Europe and four crew members, were killed. Prince Friedrich Christian Schaumburg-Lippe (1906-1983), the younger brother of Prince Adolf, who served as Goebbels adjutant , opposed the burial of Ellen and her husband in the Bukkeburg mausoleum because she was not of "Aryan origin."

After the death of Prince Adolf, the new head of the princely house of Schaumburg-Lippe was his younger brother Volrad .
