Biography
Born in the family of a printing worker. He took part in the First World War in 1914-1918. After the war, he studied at the universities of Vienna, Gothenburg ( Sweden ) and Leipzig ( Germany ) [3] . In the latter he graduated in 1923 as a Doctor of Philosophy [4] . Since 1927 he worked at the Institute. Marx and Engels in Moscow . He took part in the 1929 Siberian expedition to Tuva . As a result, an article was written about Tuvan land, and later a book on this subject [5] . He also traveled to Mongolia , Nepal , Afghanistan and other territories [3] .
In 1930-1933 he lived in Berlin . In 1933-1938 he worked in Vienna, and then emigrated to the United States. Since 1939, he worked at Mills College in Auckland , California, where he served as professor of oriental studies. In 1944 he received American citizenship . In 1947 he moved to the University of California at Berkeley, where he worked until the end of his life (in 1948-1961 as a professor of art history) [4] . In 1962 he retired [3] .
He specialized in archeology, anthropology, sinology and the history of art. In particular, he left works on anthropology and history of Tuva territory, Siberia , China , history and culture of the Huns , on socialism , biographical works on Karl Marx .
