EuroCity

EuroCity
German Class 101 locomotive pulling a EuroCity train from Swiss and German wagons

EuroCity , ( EC ) - type of international trains in the European railway network. Unlike IC ( InterCity ) trains , ECs are international trains that meet several of the criteria below. The first EuroCity trains were introduced in 1987 .

In the pre- Schengen era, passport control was carried out in EC trains while traveling, and not while the train was parked at the station or during the boarding and alighting of passengers, as was sometimes the case with other types of trains. Only some routes require a preliminary reservation of seats (although it is possible and recommended for all other types of trains), and, in some cases, additional payment.

Many of EuroCity trains have personalized names, continuing the practice begun by luxury trains of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the names are the same as those used by Trans Europ Express ( TEE ) trains that followed the same route. For example, the train Paris - Milan is called "Lutetia".
