Panda 141 / 141A was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro as a modern interpretation of the ideas embodied in the Citroën 2CV and Renault 4 - the simplicity and cheapness of both the car itself and its maintenance. Fiat Panda was introduced to the public in 1980 . Initially, the model was equipped with a small, two-cylinder engine with air cooling, a volume of 562 cm³ (taken from Fiat 126 ) and a four-cylinder engine with water cooling, a volume of 903 cm³ (with Fiat 127 ).
The Austrian company Steyr-Puch developed an all-wheel drive system, and in 1983 the Panda 4x4 version appeared with an engine of 965 cm³ with a capacity of 48 liters. with. - This was the first car of such a small class, equipped with an all-wheel drive system. Perhaps this development was the "answer" to the Soviet Niva VAZ-2121 , which had a certain popularity in Austria in those years - for example, Niva were purchased for the Austrian police.
In July 1984, the millionth Fiat Panda rolled off the assembly line, and by the end of 1985, some 1,400,000 vehicles of this model had already been produced. In 1986, the model was slightly updated, and the set of engines was changed with new, more powerful and economical modifications. By August 1988, 2 million cars had already been produced.
In 1990, the Panda Elettra version appeared - a two-seater electric car . Batteries took the place of the back row of seats. Initially, the car weighed 1,150 kg (mainly due to the battery) and developed a capacity of 18 liters. with. However, in 1992 it was possible to reduce weight and increase power to 23.8 liters. with.
Fiat Panda remained popular both in the 1980s and in the first half of the 1990s, despite the poor quality. In the early years of production, the model also suffered greatly from corrosion, as, in fact, many Fiat models of that time. In 1993-1994, in Germany, the Panda was one of the cheapest new cars - its price starting from 11,990 DM; cheaper it was only built on the basis of the Panda Seat Marbella and the initial configuration of the VAZ-2108 .

During the development of the new Panda (codenamed Model 169 ) it was planned to give the name "Gingo", but it was considered too similar to the Renault Twingo and, thus, it was decided to leave the old name. By design, the new Panda resembles a micro- van or micro-SUV rather than a hatchback like the first generation. In 2004, the car was recognized as the best car in Europe . Since September 2005, all cars are equipped with ABS , EBD , stability control and front airbags in the basic version. On October 5, 2005, the 500,000th Fiat Panda II was rolled off the assembly line.
