The son of Alain III , whom he inherited.
He participated in the Third Crusade (1189-1192).
Received from King John Landless Land in England - Swavossi and Folborn, who in 1199 exchanged Baron Roger la Zouche Ashby (Belmeis) (William la or le Zouche, Belmeis, 1st Baron of Ashby) for the Breton lords of Plemieux and Bodieux.
The first marriage was married to Mabille de Fougeres (d. 1198), the daughter of Raul II, Baron de Fougeres, the great Seneschal Brittany, and his wife Jeanne de Dol. Six of their children are known:
- Geoffrey (d. September 15, 1221), 5th Viscount Rogan
- Eloise (d. 1259)
- Katerina (d. No earlier than 1259)
- Conan (d. After 1213)
- Olivier I (d. 1225/28), 6th Viscount Rogan
- Alain V (d. 1242), 7th Viscount Rogan.
He founded Bonrepos Abbey with his wife.
Widowed, married Catherine, whose origin is not clear. From her is a daughter not known by name.
He died on October 27, 1205.
