Oh Sae-young (Oh Sae-young 吳世榮; May 2, 1942, Yongwang, Jeollanam -do Province ) is a South Korean poet and publicist.

Short Biography

In 1965, he graduated from Seoul National University College of Liberal Arts and Science and began working as a Korean language teacher at a girls' school in Jeongju. In 1967, he went to work in a school in Seoul . In 1968-1971 He studied at the Seoul University Master's program at the Department of Korean Literature. Upon completion of the magistracy, he remained working at the same university at the Faculty of Humanities as an assistant teacher, and a year later became a teacher-hour at Inha and Tanguk universities. In 1974, he began working as a teacher at the Faculty of Humanities at Jongnam University. In 1980, he completed his doctoral studies at Seoul National University , defending his thesis "Study of Korean Romantic Poetry" and receiving the title of Doctor of Philosophy.

One of the founders of the Society of Free Writers (1974), whose members opposed the military administration of Chon Duhvan . In May 1980, he, among six professors at Jongnam University, signed a petition demanding democratization against the rule of a military dictatorship. After the trial, two professors were fired, and four others, including O Sén, were warned. In 1981, he, like many other professors, left the university. In 1982, in Taipei, together with poets from Korea, Taiwan and Japan founded the "Society of Asian Poets." Since 1994 - professor at Seoul National University [1] .

In 1991, O Sén took part in the literary festival in Macedonia , in a seminar in France , and also traveled to Russia , where he saw the coup and tanks from the window of the Ukraine Hotel. In subsequent years, he lectured on Korean literature at the University of New York , the University of Berkeley (1995), and the Czech University in Prague. In 2006, he participated in poetry readings at the Berkeley Museum of Fine Arts. In 2011 he became a member of the National Academy of Arts. In 2015, O Selong came to Russia to participate in a meeting with Korean poets and writers, which was jointly held by ISAA Moscow State University and the Korean Institute of Translation. In 2017, he was a guest of the International Book Fair in Moscow, where his collection of poems in Russian translation was presented.

Creativity

He is the author of 19 poetry collections, 9 collections of Buddhist poems, several collections of essays and a number of theoretical works on poetry. His poems about the eternal, understandable to everyone and leaving no one indifferent: about the transience of life, summing up the results of the end of one's life, about the sorrow of separation, about memories, love, emotional closeness. And all this is inseparably connected with the eternal nature, contemplating the world around, participating in human life and reflecting it. Often, O Selen uses traditional images, intertwining them with his own original allusions and comparisons [2] .

The poet is a laureate of many prestigious literary awards, and his poem “Music” was included in the school curriculum on Korean literature. His poems have been translated into many languages ​​of the world, including Russian. The collection “The Chessboard of the Starry Sky”, published in English, took 12th place in 2016 in the list of best sellers according to the version of the literary magazine Chicago Review [3] .
