The Ibero-American Institute of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation ( German : Ibero-Amerikanische Institut Preußischer Kulturbesitz , Spanish Instituto Ibero-Americano Patrimonio Cultural Prusiano , abbreviated IAI) is a German interdisciplinary center for scientific and cultural exchange with Latin America , Spain , Portugal and the Caribbean region. The Institute is located in Berlin near Potsdamer Platz at 37 Potsdamer Platz in the same room as the State Library . It was founded in 1930.
Structure and Funds
The Institute consists of the following departments: library, private archives department, special collections and projects department and central services department. The Institute is one of the most important research centers in Latin America and the countries of the Iberian Peninsula in Europe.
The institute funds include such special collections:
Music library: here is a collection of audio and video materials from the Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking countries of Europe and America. The collection consists of 15,000 vinyl records, 2,000 singles, 1,000 gramophone records, 4,500 CDs, 900 audio cassettes and 1,200 audio rolls.
Map collection: since 1957, the Institute has been collecting maps of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. The collection consists of 68,550 printed and 80 handwritten maps, as well as 1,348 atlases. Most of the collection is historical maps.
Archive of images and diatek: the collection was founded in 1973. The funds consist of 60,000 photographs and 22,000 transparencies.
Archive of newspaper clippings: since 1930, the institute has been collecting newspaper clippings about the countries of Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula. The collection consists of 300,000 newspaper clippings. In 1990, collections of the Institute of International Politics of the German Democratic Republic and the German Institute for Contemporary History (together with 76,000 clippings) were added to the Institute’s funds. Since 1999, the institute stopped collecting newspaper clippings.
