Early life and education

Born February 11, 1957 in Park House, Sandringham , Norfolk County. At birth, Jane was known as the Honorable Cynthia Jane Spencer . In 1975 , when her grandfather Albert Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer passed away, and her father became the 8th Earl Spencer, she received the courtesy title - Lady Cynthia Jane Spencer .

Her parents got married in 1954 , and divorced in 1969 . She always used her middle name “Jane”. One of Jane's godfathers was Prince Edward, Duke of Kent . Lady Jane Spencer was a bridesmaid at the wedding of the Duke of Kent with Katherine Worsley in 1961. [1]

Like her sisters, Lady Jane Spencer was educated at West Heath Boarding School , near Sevenox in Kent . Sources say that she was an excellent student, having received the status of the prefect of the school and successfully passed the a-Level exams [2] . It is likely that Jane was the most academically gifted of the three sisters.

Marriage and children

On April 20, 1978, at the Westminster Abbey, Lady Jane Spencer married Robert Fellows (born December 11, 1941), the future personal secretary of Queen Elizabeth . At the ceremony, Diana, Princess of Wales , acted as a bridesmaid.

In June 1999, Robert Fellows received the Queen of Life Peer from the Queen as Baron Fellows of Shotesham in Norfolk County. He was also knighted under the name of Sir Robert Fellows. [3]

Lord and Lady Fellows have three children and four grandchildren:

  • The Honorable Laura Jane Fellows (born July 19, 1980), married on May 30, 2009 to Nick Pettman (born 1974). The couple has two sons.
  • The Honorable Alexander Robert Fellows (born March 23, 1983), married September 20, 2013 to Alexander Finley. They have two children:
    • Robert George Fellows (born April 10, 2015)
    • Rose Jane Fellows (born August 10, 2016)
  • The Honorable Eleanor Ruth Fellows (born August 20, 1985).

Lady Jane Fellows' children are cousins of Prince William and Prince Harry . Laura Pettman is the godmother of Princess Charlotte , daughter of Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge [4] .

Lady Diana Spencer was in Scotland in the summer of 1980 , where she helped her sister Jane with the care of her newborn daughter Laura.

Relations with Diana, Princess of Wales

Lady Fellows was the only member of the Spencer family who did not give media interviews about the death of the Princess of Wales and her life after her death. Only in 2013, Baroness Jane Fellows gave an interview to reporters [5] . After the death of Diana, different people voiced conflicting opinions about the relationship between the sisters. Paul Burrell, Diana’s butler, stated that the relationship was tense since Lord Fellows was the Queen’s secretary and that at the time of Diana’s death, the sisters had not communicated for several years [6] . On the other hand, Mary Clark, the nanny of Diana, the author of the book of memoirs about Diana, reported that the relationship between the sisters Diana and Jane was not as tense as claimed or suggested by Burrell and others [7] .

Sisters Sarah and Jane flew to Paris with their ex-son-in-law, Prince Charles , to accompany Princess Diana's body to a funeral in England. Many witnesses reported that Lady Fellows was very upset and needed support when she saw Diana's body in a hospital in Paris. Sarah and Jane attended a public funeral ceremony for their younger sister. After the death of Diana, the Lord and Lady Fellows spent most of their lives with their three children. Lady Fellows also attended the wedding of her nephew, Prince William, Duke of Cambridge , with Catherine Middleton on April 29, 2011. [8]
