Crushed Pile

Crushed stone pile ( eng. Vibro stone column ) - building structure, consisting of a well filled with compacted crushed stone . It is used to strengthen soft soils, prone to thinning - primarily such as clays and loams , especially under the action of seismic deformations. Typically, the installation of a crushed stone column is carried out by a special “floating vibratory system”, which simultaneously creates a well and immediately fills it with crushed stone with compaction. Associated with this is the English term “ vibro stone column ” (literally - “vibro-stone column”).

An example of the use of crushed stone piles is the construction of the Crimean bridge . [1] [2]

In the narrow-minded glance, a mere “pillar of stones” is a rather strange building structure. It really is not used to support load-bearing structures with the exception of the bases under the slab foundation . Usually crushed stone piles are mounted next to the pile foundation in order to strengthen the soil into which the main piles of metal pipes or reinforced concrete are immersed. Under a static load, crushed stone piles play a small role, but with a dynamic shear of soils, although this seems incredible, they begin to behave like the physics of large rigid springs. In addition, even compacted crushed stone is a porous structure and, through itself, relieves excess water pressure in clay and clay loam. All this together reduces strain and shortens the time of stabilization of strains, which eliminates the possibility of thinning and loss of soil strength under seismic action.

Shrinkage of the foundation due to gravel piles is reduced in practice by 2-6 times. [2] [3] [4] [5]
