Biography

Born on the estate of Elthorpe ( Northamptonshire ). The only son of Sir John Spencer (c. 1549-1600) and Mary Kathleen, daughter of Sir Robert Kathleen (d. 1574).

In the years 1597-1598, Robert Spencer was a member of Parliament from Brackley . He served as Commissioner for the collection of Northamptonshire in 1600 and Sheriff of Northamptonshire in 1601-1602. In 1601, Robert Spencer became a Knight of the Order of the Garter .

On July 21, 1603, Sir Robert Spencer received the title of Baron Spencer of Wormliton (peer of England ) from the new English King James I Stuart .

On August 5, 1607, Baron Robert Spencer, together with Sir Ralph Winwood, represented England in the negotiations at The Hague for peace between Spain and the Netherlands.

Family

On February 15, 1587, in Brington, Northamptonshire, Robert Spencer married Margaret Willoughby (1564-1597), the daughter of Sir Francis Willoughby (1547-1596) and Elizabeth Littelton. The couple had seven children in marriage:

  • Mary Spencer (baptized August 24, 1588 - July 14, 1658), wife of Sir Richard Anderson (d. 1630)
  • Elizabeth Spencer (baptized November 30, 1589 - November 19, 1618), wife of Sir George Fane (d. 1640)
  • Sir John Spencer (December 6, 1590 - August 16, 1610)
  • William Spencer, 2nd Baron Spencer of Wormliton (baptized January 4, 1592 - December 19, 1636), married to Lady Penelope Risley
  • Sir Richard Spencer (baptized October 21, 1593 - November 1, 1661), married to Mary Sandys
  • Sir Edward Spencer (baptized March 2, 1594 - February 16, 1655/1656), married to Margaret Goldsmith.
  • Margaret Spencer (August 14, 1597 - December 6, 1613).
