Gitsur belonged to the influential People of the Hawk Valley and was one of the leading Icelandic politicians of the Sturlung era. Under the leadership of Kolbein the Younger, he resisted the attempts of Sturla Sighvatson to establish power over the entire island, and in 1241 it was Gitsur who, on the orders of the Norwegian king, organized the assassination of Snorri Sturluson .
In 1258, Gitsur received the title of Jarl of Iceland from him, which he wore until his death.
