Biography

Born near the city of Brecon in South Wales in the family of Norman and Brenda Glover. In 1950, Glover’s sister, Christine, was born. In 1955, the Glover family moved to St. Helens, Merseyside County. He studied at Harrow School for boys ( en: Harrow High School ). From the age of 13, Glover became interested in rock music and began playing the guitar. At school, he gathered his first band, Madisons , which later merged with another local band and formed Episode Six , where he became friends with vocalist Ian Gillan .

After John Lord and Richie Blackmore - members of Deep Purple , who were looking for a replacement for Rod Evans , who did not fit into their chosen group style - saw Gillan at one of the Episode Six performances, they invited him to join their group, replacing Rod. The samples of Gillan were successful, and so in the summer of 1969, he joined Deep Purple , bringing Glowan with him from Episode Six . Years later, it was considered to be considered “classic”, the so-called Deep Purple, Mark II ( Ian Gillan - vocals, Richie Blackmore - guitar, John Lord - keys, Roger Glover - bass, Ian Paice - drums). Glover later recalled that when meeting with participants Deep Purple was frightened by the gloominess of the participants in the new group, who "... wore black and looked very mysterious."

Hamburg, 1971

The first record in the new group was the album Concerto for Group and Orchestra, composed by John Lord (performed by Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ), recorded at a concert in the Albert Hall on September 24, 1969. After that, the “classic” albums went: In Rock (1970), Fireball (1971), Machine Head (1972).

Glover's latest album, recorded as part of Deep Purple in the 1970s, was the 1973 album Who Do We Think We Are (so named because the Italians, disturbed by the noise level at the farm where the album was recorded, asked a repeated question: “For whom do they even accept themselves? ”). Since 1972, relations between the members of the group began to deteriorate badly, especially between Gillan and Blackmore, who did not tolerate each other at all. And in 1973, the old disagreements within the team were overwhelmed by general dissatisfaction with the last album, after which the band members finally quarreled.

In December 1972, Deep Purple managers met with John Lord and Roger Glover and asked them to make every effort to save the group. Those convinced Ian Pace and Richie Blackmore to remain, who had already conceived their own project, but Blackmore put a condition to the management: the indispensable dismissal of Glover. The latter, noting that colleagues began to shun him, demanded explanations from Tony Edwards, who admitted (in June 1973) that Blackmore demanded his departure. Angry Glover immediately filed a letter of resignation. After the last Deep Purple joint concert in Osaka , Japan , on June 29, 1973, Blackmore, passing by Glover on the stairs, just threw over his shoulder: "Nothing personal: business is business." Glover suffered from this trouble and for the next three months did not leave the house, partly because of the aggravated problems with the stomach. Immediately after the departure of Glover, Gillan left the group, after which the group was on the verge of collapse.

After his recovery, Glover concentrated on producing, producing groups such as Judas Priest , the first works of Whitesnake , Nazareth , Michael Schenker Group and Elf . Also recorded 2 solo albums - Butterfly Ball (1974) and Elements (1978), after which in 1978, unexpectedly for many, he became a member of the group Rainbow - the group of his former Deep Purple colleague Ritchie Blackmore , because of the differences with which 1973 and left her.

Roger was supposed to produce the next Rainbow album, but Blackmore soon suggested that he become the band's bass player. Roger Glover:

I no longer wanted to play in groups when I left Deep Purple . When I came to the Rainbow , I thought: “God, I'm not going to do it again!” But when I saw Richie playing, I gave up ... Although the Rainbow had amazing live performances, the sales of their records were just as amazingly small. Rainbow was doomed. Although Polydor sold quite a few records to Richie, this was not enough to satisfy him. Therefore, the group was no longer supposed to live. My task, to save Rainbow , was to give the music a little bit of a commercial orientation, more melody and less aggression, demons, dragons, witches and other evil spirits. More simple things like sex, sex and more sex.

It is not very clear why Blackmore changed his mind about Glover and how they managed to forget the old grievances, but Glover recorded 5 albums with the Rainbow and stayed with her until it ceased to exist and reformed Deep Purple in 1984 with its “classic” line-up. Since 1984, Glover has again appeared in Deep Purple , sometimes releasing solo and side albums.

Creativity Outside Deep Purple

In the years after leaving Deep Purple, Glover recorded three solo albums: in 1974, “Butterfly Ball,” and in 1978, “Elements . ” In 1983, he writes "Mask" . After the reunion of Deep Purple, he stops solo work for a while.

In 1988, after retiring from Gillan's group, Glover recorded the album Accidentally on Purpose with him. In 2002, Glover recorded his fourth solo album "Snapshot" . Glower's daughter from the first marriage Gillian took part in the recording of this album. In 2011, Glover ’s fifth solo album “If Life Was Easy” was released . For his recording, Roger invited Dan McCafferty and Pete Agnew from Nazareth .

In March 2012, while in Switzerland, he made an unexpected decision to perform on stage with Purpendicular , a Deep Purple tribute band.
