Sixth Round

“Riot” in Newcastle [1]

One of the matches of the sixth round was held in Newcastle at St. James Park Stadium, where the local team hosted Nottingham Forest . The match began under the dictation of the guests: already at 85 seconds they took the lead, thanks to a goal by Ian Boyer . The home team was able to recoup in the middle of the half - a goal scored by David Craig recorded on himself, but just before the whistle at the break Forest was again able to come forward - Bill O'Kane distinguished himself. At the 56th minute of the meeting, the author of the first goal “forty”, David Craig, knocked Mackenzie into his penalty area, Dankan Mackenzie , one of the defenders of the owners began to argue heatedly with the referee on this episode, for which he received a red card. George Lyall realized the penalty, making the score 3: 1, which served as a signal to the fans to the beginning of the riots. About three hundred people broke on the lawn of St. James Park. The teams hurriedly retreated from the football field, which became the battlefield. For ten minutes, the police revived the raging crowd, and all this time, Newcastle head coach Joe Harvey urged the referee to resume the game. As a result, it was decided to continue the match, so as not to aggravate the already precarious position in the stands. “Magpies”, having less than one player, defeated a shocked opponent with a score of 4: 3. As a result of the fights in the stands and on the field, 103 people sought medical help, 23 were hospitalized, two of them received head injuries, 39 were detained and taken to the police station and one was sentenced to six months in prison.

A team from Nottingham sent a formal protest to the Football Association , to which the secretary, Ted Crocker, announced the presence of the commission at that match, which investigated the causes of the unrest, and that there was no doubt about the disqualification of Newcastle. Later, however, the Football Association, represented by the same Ted Crocker, announced that the result of the first match was canceled, and the match itself must be replayed in a neutral arena [2] , and if a tie is recorded in the match, then it will be followed by two overtime of 15 minutes , despite the fact that this rule applies to replays after a draw in the first meeting, but the fact of the replay of the first match takes place. However, this meeting at Goodison Park ended in a draw, and the Football Association replayed this match again at Everton Stadium. In the last replay, Newcastle United won with a score of 1: 0. Goal designed by Malcolm MacDonald .
